ST MATTHEWS CATHOLIC CHURCH: WWW.STMATTHEW-PARISH.ORG

St. Matthew Catholic Church is a large and thriving parish of San Mateo, California. We welcome you into our active faith community.

It is amazing to note the growth in San Mateo's community that is reflected in the changes in thechurch and school. March 29, 1776, Father Pedro Font held the first Mass on the banks of San Mateo Creek (behind the apartment building between West Third and Baywood Avenue). Afterwards Mass was held at the St. Matthew's Hospice. When the hospice was dismantled, Mass continued at a local public school.

A Jesuit priest from the Santa Clara Mission used to ride the 40 miles on a mule to celebrate the Mass in these early years. In 1863, Father Denis Dempsey held Mass at the first formal St. Matthew's structure, a little wood-steepled church that stood at Third Avenue and "A" Street (now Ellsworth Avenue, where Aaron Bros. now stands.)

Welcome to St. Catherine of Siena Parish on behalf of our parishioners and staff. This is a parish with a long history of prayer, friendships and service to others. Added to that is the spiritual formation of our children, and now we have been adding yet another dimension: the melding of persons of different ethnic backgrounds. All of the above adds up to a very rich mix of persons and possibilities. Again we welcome you and hope that you will be blessed by our presence as we are by yours’, and all of us blessed by our brother Jesus.

PENINSULA TEMPLE SHOLOM: WWW.SHOLOM.ORG

Over the years, Peninsula Temple Sholom employed several assistant and associate rabbis, including Rabbi Andrew Strauss, Rabbi Jay Miller, Rabbi David Wirtschafter and Rabbi Kim Ettlinger. The most recent, Rabbi Rebekah Stern, came to PTS as a student rabbinic intern in fall 2010, and went on contract as the Assistant Rabbi in July 2011.

In June 2001, we celebrated Rabbi Raiskin’s 45 years with Peninsula Temple Sholom and 50 years with the Rabbinate. Sadly, in April 2006, shortly before his scheduled retirement, the beloved rabbi passed away and we mourned the loss of his spiritual guidance and teaching. Now, under the leadership of Rabbi Daniel Feder — who had been hired shortly before Rabbi Raiskin passed away — our congregation continues to grow and learn as we worship and celebrate together. A recent joyous milestone was the October 2007 celebration of Cantor Barry Reich’s 40th anniversary with PTS.

We hope you enjoyed this journey through Peninsula Temple Sholom’s earliest days. That is only the beginning — more history of PTS is being written every day!

BUDDHIST TEMPLE IN SAN MATEO: WWW.SANMATEOBUDDHISTTEMPLE.ORG

From early 1900 to 1910, the religious needs of the Buddhists in the San Mateo area were filled by dedicated leaders in the community. With the growth of the Japanese group in San Mateo, Belmont, and San Carlos areas, a decision was made to establish a branch of the San Francisco Buddhist Church in San Mateo. On February 20, 1910, an inaugural ceremony was held. This Temple thereafter served the Buddhist Sangha of the San Mateo area by conducting services at various local residences and in rented halls.

In June 1939, it was decided to purchase land and to launch construction of a meeting place. The present land was purchased in 1940 and construction plans were started. However, with the outbreak of the war in 1941, all plans had to be suspended.

In the fall of 1945, as families returned to the San Mateo area from the relocation camps, the dedicated leaders organized the holding of services in a rented hall. Ministers from San Francisco were invited to conduct the services.

UNITED METHODIST CHURCH IN BURLINGAME: WWW.BURLUMC.ORG

All people are of sacred worth; no exceptions!

The church was born multicultural, and the Spirit was given to the Church in a multilingual context, and we believe that God is more comfortable and pleased when we model diversity of God's kingdom; therefore, we value diversity and respect a culture of individuals, as we work at building community across cultural and language barriers.

We believe that faith is formed and nurtured in the context of relationships.

We believe that faith is a lifelong journey.

Faith is expressed in community and in mission to the world, with special attention to those on the margins of society.

Recognizing that grace is ultimately a mystery, we encourage people to experience God's grace through passionate worship, Bible study, the sacraments, prayer, fasting, stewardship and mission.

NEW LIFE COMMUNITY CHURCH IN BURLINGAME: WWW.NLCOMMUNITYCHURCH.ORG

We believe that we are all on a spiritual journey. We invite you to be a part of our church family no matter where you are in your spiritual journey. Whether you are just beginning to investigate God, a long-time follower of Jesus, or somewhere in between -- please come check us out and consider being a part of New Life.

Our Sunday morning gatherings are wonderful times of celebrating God where you will find: a safe environment in which to experience God, practical teaching that is relevant to your everyday life, and a time of worship that calls us into contemplation and celebration.

The New Life Community Church statement of faith is not new or innovative but has its roots in 2000 years of historical Christianity. These doctrines, or “core beliefs”, are in the center of evangelical theology and are not speculative, evolving, or tradition-based. We try not to wander far from these core beliefs of the Bible, or engage in arguments over the many opposing views on the more obscure doctrines or teachings found in the Bible. We hope that in these beliefs, a spirit of love would prevail.

TRANSFIGURATION EPISCOPAL CHURCH: WWW.TRANSFIG-SM.ORG

On Sunday mornings we gather to celebrate God at three different worship services. Each service has the following in common: We listen to the Message of God, we pray and we celebrate Holy Communion. Then we gather for fellowship at the coffee hour.

Each service offers its unique approach to worship:

In the 8:00 Eucharist we use the Rite I text with its more traditional language. This quiet service thrives with a smaller community.

The 9:30 Family Service is a half-hour service designed for families with young children and those who like to be around families with young children. This service includes a child-focused story time, singing and movement. This short service is a great way to be introduced (or reintroduced) to the worship of God.

COMMUNITY BAPTIST CHURCH OF SAN MATEO: WWW.CBCSM.ORG

Community Baptist Church (CBC) was established in 1948 by Mrs. Margarita Lake “Mother” Garton, who had a vision to reach Chinese people in the San Mateo area. As the need grew for a place to worship, fellowship, and reach more Chinese people, a congregation was born. In 1958, the group was incorporated as the San Mateo Chinese Baptist Community Church.

In order to reach a wider section of the community, in 1962 the congregation voted to change the name to Community Baptist Church. In 1989, Pastor Jim Kennon had a vision to add an additional service, one that would serve the growing Cantonese speaking population in the Bay Area. Thus the Cantonese service became a reality in 1990. Twelve years later, Pastor Jenny Quey had a vision to add another service that would reach even more Chinese people.  In 2002, the Mandarin-speaking congregation was born. Most recently, in 2005, CBC has been working with a group of believers in order reach the Hispanic community of San Mateo.

Welcome to the preparation program for the sacrament of Confirmation. The program is a time of prayerful thought and active formation for the young men and women of our parish. At St. Veronica, the Confirmation program is open to those of high school age who have completed 8th grade religious studies, either in the Faith Formation program or in the Parish School. The format of the program provides for education, worship, service and reflection in preparation for receipt of the sacrament. Our candidates for Confirmation will participate in weekly "home group" meetings, meet occasionally together during Sunday liturgy, service our community and attend a weekend retreat. The home groups meet evenings in the homes of our catechists, typically 10-12 times during the year.

THE MESSAGE CHURCH: WWW.THEMESSAGE.CC

We believe the Bible is inspired by God, and relays to us all that God wants us to know about Himself, life, and ourselves.

We believe there is only One God–and though we do not fully understand this, He has revealed himself in three persons...Father, Son, and Holy Spirit (commonly known as the Trinity).

We believe in the Deity of the Jesus, that somehow he was both fully God and fully human.

We believe that though originally good, humans willingly chose and continue to choose to rebel against God–ushering evil and death, both physical and spiritual
