The Peninsula Golf and Country Club was founded in 1911 as The Beresford Country Club. Many features of the club grounds were different than they are today. The first Clubhouse, which was later used as a residence for the club manager, was located where the maintenance facility stands today.

Following a groundbreaking ceremony on July 4, 1913, the Clubhouse was open for members on New Years Eve 1915. The course measured 6012 yards and the only trees of any significance were the eucalyptus that ringed the course and the double row that ran north from the west side of the driving range. There were open creeks that ran from the 15th and 4th holes that joined together near the driving range and from there, ran to the bay.

Originally built in 1933 as a way to aid unemployed laborers during the Depression and named San Mateo Municipal, the course is home to the San Mateo County Championship and the O'Brien Junior Tournament, which has had such notable past winners as PGA Tour Professionals Johnny Miller, Keith Clearwater, and Mark Lye.

Since the middle 1960's the course has averaged nearly 100,000 rounds per year, making it one of the most popular golf courses in northern California.

The course was closed in April, 1999 for a complete renovation and new routing plan. In July, 2000 the course re-opened with a new look and a new name - Poplar Creek - landmarking the flow of Poplar Creek through the golf course.

The azure-blue Crystal Springs Reservoir that you can see sparkling in the sunshine as you drive down I-280 in Hillsborough is also the site of one of the Bay Area’s most unique golf courses. The first dam was built here in 1888 to create a reservoir, part of the San Francisco watershed, that fills a portion of the rift valley of the San Andreas Fault.

The course came later, in 1924, the design of William Herbert Fowler, a noted British golf architect who pioneered in designing courses that naturally followed the lay of the land as does Crystal Springs. Besides working on many famous courses in the British Isles, Fowler did golf designs on the East and West coasts of the United States.

Our mission is to enhance the experience of youth soccer in our community. The purpose of our program is to give competitive players an environment to reach their potential as both soccer players and individuals. We strongly believe that every youth program should achieve the same goals – to develop youth players in a fun, safe and educational environment.

Our program caters to competitive youth players from the ages of 8 to 19. The main focus of our program is not on winning, but on the development of the total soccer player within the framework of a team. To reach this goal we have assembled a highly qualified professional coaching staff that works within a structured age appropriate curriculum. Our desire is to promote personal responsibility, fitness, sportsmanship, and teamwork.

We are committed to meeting these goals and expect the same commitment from those that participate in our program.

The Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District's purpose is to purchase, permanently protect, and restore lands forming a regional open space greenbelt, preserve unspoiled wilderness, wildlife habitat, watershed, viewshed, and fragile ecosystems, and provide opportunities for low-intensity recreation and environmental education.

The District works to form a continuous greenbelt of permanently preserved open space by linking its lands with other public parklands. The District also participates in cooperative efforts such as the Bay Trail, Ridge Trail, and Skyline-to-the-Sea Trail, which are regional trail systems in the Bay Area that include District lands.

The District has permanently preserved nearly 60,000 acres of mountainous, foothill, and bayland open space, creating 26 open space preserves (24 of which are open to the public). The District covers an area of 550 square miles and includes 17 cities (Atherton, Cupertino, East Palo Alto, Half Moon Bay, Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, Los Gatos, Menlo Park, Monte Sereno, Mountain View, Palo Alto, Portola Valley, Redwood City, San Carlos, Saratoga, Sunnyvale, and Woodside).

The Friends are a group of people who are bonded together by their appreciation for Huddart and Wunderlich Parks. They are a combination of volunteers, donors, paid staff, and board members - all collaborating with the park rangers to preserve and protect these special resources.

It is easy to become part of the Friends community. Start by visiting the parks, where you will discover the fascinating natural and historical treasures of these unique areas of San Mateo County. Then find out how you can volunteer or donate to the ongoing efforts that help make these parks flourish for all who visit.

The Friends of Huddart and Wunderlich Parks organization was founded in 1992 and became a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in 2002. Dedicated to environmental education and land conservation, the early programs of the Friends supported various aspects of park management. The Friends activities have expanded over the years and docents now provide children's hikes in Huddart Park, as well as promote exhibits, give guided tours, and assist with school programs at the the Folger Estate Stable historic site in Wunderlich Park.

Many people are surprised to discover beautiful Shoreline Lake on the doorstep of sunny Mountain View. Not only is Shoreline a safe and expansive waterway for many water sports, including sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and canoeing, it is also a wildlife sanctuary and home to many rare, migratory birds, such as the burrowing owl. As you cruise the lake (no motorized craft are allowed, due to the fragile ecosystem which supports a host of native wildlife) you may come across migratory birds nesting on the island in the middle of the lake, but please don’t disembark or disturb the wildlife.

Visited by approximately 300,000 people a year, Sawyer Camp Trail is one of the most popular trails in San Mateo County. Located in the scenic Crystal Springs Watershed, the entire linear trail, including the proposed trail expansions, will be renamed the Crystal Springs Trail and is envisioned to provide an uninterrupted, non-motorized, multi-use route from the City of San Bruno to the Town of Woodside.

For thousands of years, this area was home to Shalshone Indians. They were considered to be an extremely warlike people, fighting with their neighbors to the north and south. They seemed to have been friendly enough when, on November 4, 1769, Gaspar de Portola and his men camped north of here, after descending from Sweeney Ridge where they were reputed to be the first white men to view the San Francisco Bay. Portola's camp is now beneath the waters of San Andreas Lake; a sign at the trail entrance on Hillcrest Boulevard points to it. In November of 1774, Captain Fernando Rivera, a principal officer of Portola, and the first to lead a group to purposely explore the Peninsula, camped near one of the Shalshone villages.

Traditional Chen Taiji is a branch school of the Chen Qingchou Martial Arts Association, based in Xulu (Chen) Village, Henan Province, China (birth place of tai-chi).  Our head teacher, Master Chin King-Loon, offers Chen style Tai Chi classes at many Bay Area locations including San Mateo, Palo Alto and San Jose of California, United States.

There are now five main styles of Tai Chi: Chen, Yang, Sun and the two Wu styles. Chen style Tai Chi is widely acknowledged as the oldest and ancestor of all the other tai-chi styles. It was kept hidden in the Chen family until recent times because it was a highly prized and valuable defense skill for the villages. It was also practiced by young and old for health benefits. Chen style Tai Chi has only recently made its appearance on the world scene and is fast becoming the most popular form of Tai Chi in the world today. Both old and young Tai Chi practitioners are beginning to appreciate why generations of the Chen family were determined to maintain their sacred art in its purest form so that everyone may experience the maximum benefits under their guidance.
