BURLINGAME LIONS CLUB: WWW.BURLINGAMECA.LIONWAP.ORG

Lions meet the needs of local communities and the world. The 1.35 million members of our volunteer organization in 206 countries and geographic areas are different in many ways, but share a core belief – community is what we make it.

Whenever a Lions club gets together, problems get smaller. And communities get better. That's because we help where help is needed – in our own communities and around the world – with unmatched integrity and energy.

Our 46,000 clubs and 1.35 million members make us the world's largest service club organization. We're also one of the most effective. Our members do whatever is needed to help their local communities. Everywhere we work, we make friends. With children who need eyeglasses, with seniors who don’t have enough to eat and with people we may never meet.

HILLSBOROUGH, CA SCHOOL FOUNDATION: WWW.HSF.ORG

Last year, we raised over $3 million providing critical funding for the educational excellence we expect in Hillsborough. Together, we have pioneered a new approach to public education by making our children and their futures a key priority in our community.

While our community is donating dollars for our schools through the Annual Giving Campaign, we are also participating in HSF Events, which raise substantial revenue through exciting community activities and events. Each fall, HSF Events sponsors the Hillsborough Classic Tennis Tournament and Luncheon, followed in the winter by the Dinner Dance and Auction. We close our school year with Family Fun Day in June, an event which combines the Family Fun Run and Carnival for one great community building affair. Our school year is packed with wonderful events and fundraising, and HSF appreciates the enormous commitment of our families to support excellence in our Hillsborough schools.

BURLINGAME ROTARY CLUB: WWW.BURLINGAMEROTARY.ORG

"Service Above Self," our Rotary motto, is not a new idea. There is power in these words, however, and when we join together this power can be put to such amazing purpose locally, nationally and globally. Historically, Rotary has been the power behind such organizations as UNESCO, The United Nations and the campaign to eradicate the dread disease of polio with Polio Plus. In our communities Rotary is known to be the club with much regard and respect. Presidents, Premiers, Mayors and many other leaders have been and are Rotarians worldwide. We are a part of 1.2 million men and women in over 140 countries who serve daily in their communities and businesses living by another standard we call "The Four Way Test." This test is a standard by which we can measure and judge our decisions and actions. This test is the foundation of the things we think, say or do: "Is it the truth?" "Is it fair to all concerned?" "Will it build goodwill and better friendships?" "Will it be beneficial to all concerned?" We are looking for others to join us in pursuit of the Rotary purpose and ideals building a better world.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE OF PALO ALTO: WWW.THEJUNIORLEAGUE.ORG

Over one hundred years ago, Mary Harriman founded the Junior League in New York City as a direct result of her work with recent immigrants in the settlement houses there. Her vision was to establish a channel to promote social responsibility and an opportunity to positively impact the community at large.

The Junior League of Palo Alto•Mid Peninsula, Inc. (JLPA•MP) continues this tradition through its ongoing efforts to tackle difficult social issues such as affordable housing, societal violence, homelessness, drug addiction and children at risk.

The JLPA•MP seeks to affect positive change in these and other community issues, through the hands-on work of our volunteers by funding League-sponsored community projects, by making direct grants to not-for-profit organizations whose interests and priorities are consistent with ours and by advocating for those with whom we partner on community projects.

HILLSBOROUGH CAROLANDS MANSION: WWW.CAROLANDS.ORG

Carolands is among the grandest American residences. Designed by celebrated French architect Ernest Sanson for Harriett Pullman Carolan, heiress to the Pullman railroad car fortune, the 65,000 square feet, 98-room mansion was built between 1912 and 1916 on a 500-acre estate at the highest point of the exclusive township of Hillsborough, California. The plans for the gardens and surrounding park were drawn up by the great landscape designer Achille Duchêne.

Architectural historian Michael Middleton Dwyer discussed Carolands' place among the great houses of its day - such as Harbor Hill, Lynnewood, Biltmore, and Vizcaya - and then explores the history of how Sanson, Duchêne, and Polk came to be commissioned to build this magnificent house for the heiress.
